Former Kyoto Jingoro Family Residence (Prefectural designated cultural property)

<About the Kyoto Jingoro family>

The oldest and most representative historical building still standing in Imajo-juku. It is the residence of the Kyoto family, one of Imasho’s oldest families, which has been in the sake brewing business since the Edo period and has been designated as a wakihonjin (side honjin).

<Features>

It is characterized by its plastered exterior walls and udatsu (a raised ridgepole structure) that rises above the tiles. It is constructed to be covered with hot earthen walls to prevent fire from spreading, and in addition to the sleeve udatsu used to prevent fire from spreading from neighboring houses, it is also built on the roof, making it a completely fireproof structure.

The frontage of the site is approximately 20 meters, twice the size of an average townhouse. It is a large townhouse consisting of the main house where the family and servants live, and a honjin-style room where feudal lords and others stayed. The guest room and living space are clearly separated, and the inner room can be accessed directly from the front garden next to the main house through the gate.

<Guidance>

On the days when the residence is open, you can also view the interior of the former Kyoto Jingoro family residence. Admission is free, so please do visit if you have the opportunity.
